Bio

Andy Marshall joined the Department of Political Science in fall 2024 as a lecturer after three years as a junior research fellow (predoctoral/postdoctoral fellow) in Politics at the University of Oxford's New College. His Ph.D. dissertation "Language Policy and the Nation in East Africa" and postdoctoral and ongoing research examine how state language policies (laws and rules governing the use of various languages in schools, legislative debates, broadcast media, etc.) reflect and shape how people identify with their ethnicity and nation within ethnically and linguistically diverse societies through comparative case studies of Kenya and Tanzania. Marshall has experience teaching comparative government, African politics, political sociology, and international relations, and his Baylor courses include PSC 3304 Comparative Government and PSC 4v94 Governments and Politics of Africa
